Tips to Select Ultra High Temperature Tapes

In industrial products and installations that are subject to extreme temperatures, ultra high temperature tape can be an indispensable tool. Whether it needs to withstand intense heat in electronic, aerospace or appliance, or any other high temperature applications, selecting the right tape can make all the difference in performance and longevity.

As a leading manufacturer of standard and custom engineered pads, tapes and gaskets, our experts have created this article to share their tips to help you select the right ultra high temperature tape to achieve the best results in the most challenging environments. Let’s dive in and discover how you can make an informed decision for your OEM needs.

What is Ultra High Temperature Tape?

Ultra high temperature tape, also known as high temp tape or heat resistant tape, is made with a specialized type of substrate and adhesive designed to withstand prolonged exposure to elevated temperatures. This kind of tape is engineered to maintain its integrity and performance (i.e., not melting, degrading or losing its adhesive properties) even when exposed to temperatures that could cause regular tape to fail, typically ranging from 500°F (260°C) up to 2000°F (1093°C) or higher.

Often made from advanced materials that exhibit exceptional thermal stability and resistance to heat such as silicone, fiberglass, Teflon™ (PTFE) or polyimide foam, ultra high temperature tapes provide a reliable solution for various industrial applications that require durability and endurance.

Common Uses of Heat Resistant Tape

Suitable for a wide range of environments, some uses for OEM applications include:

  • Thermal insulation: ultra high temperature tape can be used to create a barrier against heat transfer, providing insulation for sensitive components or areas that need to be protected from high temperatures, such as shielding insulation around RV ovens.
  • High temperature gaskets and seals: high temp tape is critical for sealing applications such as furnace doors, ovens, test chambers or kilns where high temperatures are consistent and extreme.
  • Gasketing: in engines, exhaust systems or other high temperature environments, heat resistant tape can be used to create gaskets to provide a durable seal against heat or chemicals.
  • Electrical insulation: ultra high temperature tape is often used as insulation for wires, cables and other components that are continuously exposed to high temps, protecting them from heat-related damage and harsh environments.
  • Masking: during painting, powder coating or plating processes, high temp tape is useful for protecting the integrity of the product, withstanding high heat without leaving residue or damage the surface.

Four Key Factors to Consider When Selecting a High Temp Tape

Below we explore four important factors when determining what type of tape best serves your application needs:

  1. Continuous or Intermittent Heat Exposure

When selecting an ultra high temperature tape, the first and perhaps most important question to consider is the exposure duration to high heat. Will it be continuous or intermittent?
For contact with extreme heat sources over an extended period, the tape should be able to maintain its integrity and performance without degradation or loss of properties. The tape must possess excellent thermal stability, chemical resistance and durability.

Industrial furnaces, used across a variety of industries such as steel manufacturing or ceramic production, are an example of an application typically exposed to continuous high temp conditions. Adhesives may be used to bond and seal many components within a furnace, and they must stand up to consistent harsh temperature, chemical and mechanical stresses to provide optimal performance.

In contrast, tapes experiencing intermittent heat exposure need to withstand rapid temperature fluctuations without compromising performance. The right tape should be able to expand and contract while keeping its adhesion, flexibility and other properties intact.

Aircraft engines experience intermittent high heat during each flight. During engine operation, high heat is generated, especially in the combustion chambers and exhaust areas, but they experience periods of cooling between flight phases, such as takeoff, cruising and landing. Ultra high temperature tape is critical to the proper bonding and sealing of various components of the engine, such as heat shields.
Determining the temperature range that the tape will need to endure will help you select a tape that has a temperature resistance rating that meets your needs.

  2. Materials and Adhesive Properties

As noted above, ultra high temp tape can be manufactured using various materials, like silicone, PTFE, fiberglass or ceramic. Each has unique material compositions that will impact performance characteristics such as chemical and flame resistance, abrasion, smoke toxicity, UV radiation, removability, and more. Consider the environment where the tape will be used and choose an adhesive that can meet its specific stressors.

Another adhesive property to evaluate is the method by which the tape will be held to ensure proper bonding to a surface:
    • Applied pressure, therefore necessitating a pressure-sensitive adhesive
    • Mechanically – the tapes rely on physical mechanisms such as interlocking, friction or other means

Pressure-sensitive tapes are typically easier to apply, conform well to irregular surfaces and can be removed without leaving residue. Mechanically held tapes don’t require an adhesive layer, but instead rely on the tape’s structure and mechanical fasteners to create a bond. They work well in instances where repeated bonding and separation is desired, such as fastening and mounting applications.

Consult with our high temperature tape manufacturing professionals for further guidance in selecting the appropriate materials for your particular application.

  3. Type of Surface

The type of pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) specified can also determine the tape’s substrate compatibility with different surfaces. Is the surface smooth, rough, porous or uneven? Is it a low surface energy substrate, such as powder coated aluminum? Understanding the composition of selected materials is important to ensure that the adhesive forms a strong bond with the intended surface and performs effectively.

We also emphasize that surface preparation is a critical step in achieving proper adhesion of ultra high temperature tapes. Surface conditions play a significant role in determining the effectiveness and longevity of the tape’s bond. Proper surface prep helps the tape adhere firmly to the substrate, minimizing the risk of tape failure, peeling, splitting or premature deterioration. Typically, surface cleaning is required to remove any dirt, dust, debris or oils that could hinder correct adhesion. It may also involve roughing and/or priming the surface. Our experts can provide you with recommendations about proper surface preparation and techniques to help ensure success.

  4. Industry Standards
Ultra high temperature tape may be required to meet certain industry standards or certifications, such as those in aerospace or by entities such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Consider any relevant required standards that are applicable to your application and ensure that your selected tape meets those requirements.
